Title: "Magic Tricks"
Fandom: Fringe
Pairing: Walter and Astrid -- it's het if you want it to be.
Rating: PG? The only naughty thing is a mention of mardi gras traditions.
Summary: Walter wants to give Astrid a mardi gras present.
AN: OMG, this was my first ever comment fic. For a prompt from the awesome [personal profile] moorishflower. She wanted Walter/Astrid, but I couldn't quite manage it. :D

Dr. Bishop took a break from... whatever he was doing, which seemed to involve a terrarium full of grasshoppers and a few vials of colored smoke, and wandered over to glance at the calendar on the wall.

"Oh, silly me," he muttered. "It looks like I forgot all about Mardi Gras!"

Astrid looked up, a sinking feeling in her stomach, and watched as the scientist felt around in his trouser pocket and pulled out a string of cheap purple plastic beads. They looked a little chipped around the edges, as if they'd been kicking around for a while. "I got you a present!"

She raised her eyebrows. "Doctor Bishop, if you expect me to show you my chest..."

Dr. Bishop's face sort of crumpled a little, and Astrid felt bad in spite of herself. Walter could be bizarre, sure, but she knew as well as anyone that more often than not he was really just like a big kid who'd had a toy taken away from him. It was just easy to forget about that when he was torturing lab animals and saving the world. With a vague feeling of why do I do this to myself?, she walked up to take the beads.

She'd started to accept the "present" when he pulled his hand back and positively giggled. "Wait, not yet. I want to show you something!"

This could not be good.

Doctor Bishop shuffled back to his work station, Astrid following close behind out of a sense of morbid curiosity. He grabbed a mason jar off a shelf and filled it with water, then, moving his hands in that improbably quick and graceful way he sometimes had, shook up two of the vials of colored smoke, popped off both of their plastic lids and blended them together. He shook the mixture in one hand while with the other hand he dropped the ratty-looking string of beads into the mason jar of water. Then he plunged the vials of smoke into the jar, slammed the lid on and shook the whole thing as hard as he could.

Astrid was confused, and more so after Walter presented her with the string of beads. Their bedraggled purple coating had been replaced by a brilliant copper, like a lucky penny, with a hint of verdigris around some of the edges.

"I thought it would bring out your eyes," said Walter with an enigmatic smile.

"I... you... was that a magic trick?"

"Well, what else do you think we do around here?"

Walter went back to whatever he was doing to the grasshoppers, and for a moment Astrid turned towards the window, watching the copper beads glint in the light and wondering how Walter had figured out her favorite color.
