didn't think I wanted or needed a PDA until I read Death Note, and I kept thinking about how lucky L was to have this really cool old guy, Watari, who does all kinds of things like remind him of where he's supposed to be at what time and screen his calls for him and look up facts and information so L's mind is free to work on more complicated puzzles and, most importantly, bring him trays of pastries.

I kept thinking, damn, I want a Watari.

And then it occurred to me that an iPhone would do pretty much all of those things. It wouldn't bring me pastries, but there's probably an app that locates nearby bakeries, and honestly, that's about as close as I'm likely to get. So I got an iPhone. And, because it was obvious, I named it Watari. But the fangirling did not end there.

You know how L, Near and Mello have those computer screens that show the initial of the person who's calling, in stylish Old English Gothic letters, whenever they're on the phone?

Well, guess what I've got?

(my phone display when my husband, Daniel, is calling)

This was a really easy project with, IMO, a really stylish result. I just used the awesome What The Font? website to track down the font (it's Cloister Black), figured out the best size for iPhone wallpapers (320 x 480), and went at it in Seashore, a Mac-friendly version of the GIMP. Because I'm slightly obsessive, and because I thought that other people might want these, too, I made all 26 letters and uploaded them all to a public photobucket account.

You can find the whole alphabet here at my Photobucket. If you want A, it ended up at the very bottom for some reason.

To save photos to your iPhone:

First, make sure that the images are saved in a format that is compatible with the iPhone. JPEG, JPG2, and PNG files are compatible, for instance; XCF files are not. If you save the images from my photobucket, they'll be compatible already.

When you plug your iPhone in to your computer, iTunes will open automatically and show you a welcome screen, from which you click through to a menu with about eight different tabs at the top. The fifth tab over will say "photos." That menu will allow you to choose which pictures or folders of pictures you want to share with your phone. Click "sync" at the bottom of the screen and don't unplug the phone until it says "sync complete."

To set a wallpaper on your iPhone

This is really easy. Once you've moved the pictures onto your phone, touch the "photos" button on your phone homescreen. It's right next to the "camera" button and has a picture of a flower for some reason. Find the picture you want to use as your wallpaper, and touch the little icon in the lower left-hand corner of the screen -- it looks like a square with an arrow popping out of it. When you touch that icon, it will present a list of options, the first of which will be "Use as Wallpaper." Touch "Use as Wallpaper" and it will take you to a choice between "Set Wallpaper" and "Cancel." Touch "Set Wallpaper" and wait until it's done loading to set the wallpaper.

To assign an image to a contact.

This is my favorite part of this set of wallpapers -- the fact that you can assign all of your contacts their own letter. It's also really easy; it's almost the same as setting a wallpaper.

Say you want to assign the "codename" A to your friend Amy. Touch the "photos" icon and find the letter A image, and touch the little arrow icon in the lower left-hand corner. The last item on the list of options that should appear is "Assign to Contact." Touch that option, and you'll be taken to your list of contacts, where you can find Amy and touch her name. There will be an option to move or resize the image, but you won't have to do that if you use my wallpapers because they're already sized and centered. Click "set photo" and be sure to admire your handiwork next time Amy calls you. :) If you want to make sure it worked, check your contat info for Amy -- the A should appear as an icon next to her name.

I hope you enjoy these! I had fun with them. Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with Shonen Jump or the very cool people who came up with Death Note, and I have no plan to make any money off of this. I'm just spreading the fan love. :)
