Scrubs, "Too Old To Care," JD/Dr. Cox, idek... PG?
Title: Too Old To Care
Fandom: Scrubs
Pairing: JD/Dr. Cox
Rating: I guess PG, there's some swearing and mentions of death...
Summary: JD wants to go home with his mentor, just this one time.
AN: for a prompt by beautybecks at comment_fic. Do not take this as an indication that I will ever write Scrubs fic again!
Another long day, more bad news, more crying families and more paperwork to fill out. After a while, it seems like all the good days are the same, but all the bad days are bad in their own unique and terrible ways. One thing is constant: after the shift is over, JD goes to find Dr. Cox, to see if he has any wisdom that might redeem even one minute of the useless day.
This time when he finds Dr. Cox he doesn't even say anything, ask a question or try to make a joke. He just looks at him, and of course Perry understands.
"So what did you screw up this time, Shannon?"
"I... oh, fuck. Just everything."
"One of those days, huh?" JD still hadn't figured out how his mentor managed to know exactly when he wouldn't be able to take the sarcasm.
"You could say that. I just... you ever feel like you're doing more harm than good? Like maybe people would be better off if they'd never even come in?"
Perry took a step back, frowning. "Whoa there, Kate. You can't go there. You think you're the first doctor to wonder if people were better off when they just died in their homes like God intended? We've all been there."
JD bit his lip, embarrassed as always when he got one of these lectures. Perry turned to walk towards his office. "Come on, walk with me," he continued. JD walked with him.
"And honestly, maybe they would be, we don't know. But the fact is, they do come in, and they do ask us for help. And you have to do what you can, and not just sit there and wonder what good it is, because you're a doctor, not... I don't know, an emo band. Thank God."
They arrived at Perry's office, and went inside. JD sat on the arm of his chair and watched him getting ready to go home, filing away his files and assembling his coat, hat and gloves for the cold night outside. What the hell, it wasn't like he had anything else to lose after today.
"Doctor Cox, could I just... could I go home with you?" Adorable puppy eyes, don't fail me now...
Perry looked at him like he was picking out the best sarcastic comment of several options that presented themselves, but something stopped him, and his eyes crinkled up around the corners like they usually did when his emotional armor was failing to do its job.
"Aw, newbie..." Unexpectedly, he gave JD a hug, one of those manly hugs where you pat the other dude on the back at the same time. "It's going to be okay. Really. We're all going to be okay."
"Is that a yes?" JD probably looked like a kid on Christmas morning with a brand-new Lego Death Star. He didn't care.
"Oh, what the hell. Just don't use my toothbrush, and don't wake me up in the middle of the night, and don't even think about --"
"Oh, Doctor Cox, I could just kiss you!"
Perry held up a hand. "Whoa there, Elizabeth. At least let me have a couple of drinks first."
Which wasn't a no, exactly...
