OMG you could totally do a side story where the Leverage crew interacts with the campaign crew? And Scotty is all *expansive arm gestures* "MY PUPIL" to Hardison, because of course he taught Alec everything the boy knew eight years ago (the boy has learned much, much more since then), and Spock is all *raised eyebrow* "I find it not illogical to place you within a criminal context, Mr. Scott, given the questionable legality of the apparatus you have installed in the campaign vehicle," and Sophie tries to trip Uhura up with language after language and Uhura is all *narrowed eyes* "That Swahili accent contains a trace of a New Zealander - where did you say you came from again?"
How about, instead of making Nero the Republican candidate, you make him the campaign runner? So there is someone cleaner in the candidacy position (...Pike? Who doesn't know exactly what Nero is up to, would like to get rid of him, but the Party says Nero has to be there so Pike has to grin and bear it), which would give Jim the conviction to run an ethical campaign, because he knows his opponent is an honourable man, it's just the people surrounding him that are corrupt.
